With all the great little restaurants popping up on Fourth Street, it's nice to see another ethnic choice.
Safier Mediterranean Deli recently opened up a 641 S. Fourth St., where Obie's used to be. We were delighted by this little joint, where you can get tasty food fast from friendly workers.
I had the shish kabob platter, which came with a skewer of of charbroiled tenderloin, rice and a salad. It was delicious. The meat was tender and full of flavor, the rice was just right and the salad was tasty, fresh and had a lightly flavored dressing.
Two of my friends had the kafta kabob, which is ground beef made with onion, parsley and spices. Reviews were mixed. One friend raved, saying it was fantastic and full of flavor. Another said it was good, and kind of tasted like meat loaf but wasn't that flavorful.
We also had the falafel, which is ground dried vegetables serves with tahini. My friend who eats falafel regularly said it was better than most. I haven't eaten much falafel in my life, but I dug it.
We also had the baklava, which was delicious. It had more stuffing inside than other I've had in the past, making it a rich dessert.
